Cleaning a CPAP mask with soap and water

Proper cleaning and maintenance of your CPAP equipment ensures optimal therapy performance, prevents bacterial growth, and extends the life of your device and accessories.

Daily Cleaning Routine

After each night:

  • Disassemble. Remove the mask cushion, headgear, and tubing from the main device.
  • Wash. Use warm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap to gently clean the mask cushion and tubing.
  • Rinse & Dry. Rinse thoroughly under running water to remove all soap residue, then lay parts flat on a lint-free towel to air-dry away from direct sunlight.

Weekly Deep Clean

Once a week:

  • Headgear & Frame. Hand-wash headgear in soapy water, then rinse and air-dry. Inspect the frame for cracks or wear.
  • Humidifier Chamber. Empty any remaining water, then wash with warm soapy water. Rinse and allow to air-dry completely before refilling.
  • Filter. Remove the disposable filter and replace with a fresh one. Wash any reusable pre-filter in warm water, then air-dry before reinstalling.

Monthly Maintenance Checks

Every 30 days:

  • Inspect Tubing. Check for cracks, discoloration, or stiffness. Replace if signs of wear appear.
  • Mask Fit Test. Re-fit your mask cushion and headgear to ensure a proper seal—wear can loosen the fit over time.
  • Device Exterior. Wipe the machine’s housing with a damp cloth to remove dust. Avoid getting water into vents.

Replacing Filters & Accessories

Filters should be changed per manufacturer guidelines (usually every 1–3 months). Mask cushions and tubing typically last 3–6 months. Keep a schedule or set calendar reminders to swap out parts before performance degrades.

Troubleshooting & Best Practices

  • If you notice an unusual odor, deep-clean with a 1:1 vinegar-water solution, then rinse thoroughly.
  • Never use harsh chemicals, bleach, or antibacterial soaps—they can damage silicone and plastic.
  • Allow all parts to dry completely before reassembly to prevent mold or mildew growth.
  • Store your device and accessories in a cool, dry place when not in use.

By following this simple cleaning and maintenance schedule, you’ll keep your CPAP therapy hygienic, comfortable, and effective night after night.
